- Story Text: United States (U.S.) Ambassador to the United Nations (U.N.) Madeleine Albright visited the Georgian capital of Tbilisi on Thursday (September 1) to discuss proposals for a peaceful solution to the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict.
Abkhazian separatist forces, backed by north Caucasian mercenaries and armed covertly by Russian army units, forced Georgian troops out of the lush Black Sea province last year.
The U.N. has been trying to mediate a peaceful settlement, and Russian troops have been deployed along the border separating the two in a bid to prevent further hostilities.
In a brief statement, Albright said that the refugees should be allowed to return to Abkhazia, and that then the two sides can work out an acceptable status for Abkhazia From Tbilisi, Albright will head to western Georgia to examine the refugee situation.
