- Story Text: The historic gathering of world leaders for the 50th anniversary of the United Nations moved to the New York Public Library on Sunday evening (October 22) for a reception hosted by United States President Bill Clinton.
High security was visible for the event as prime ministers, presidents, kings and other officials converged.
Each leader's agenda included intesive rounds of bilateral meetings under the United Nations auspices. But it was a cancelled meeting that received perhaps the most attention.
The meeting between French President Jacques Chirac and Algerian President Liamine Zeroual was called off by Zeroual after France insisted that they would not exchange handshakes of cordiality in front of the world's press.
The meeting would have been very sensitive, because anti-Zeroual militants in Algeria have been linked to violent attacks on French civilians over the last several months.
On Sunday morning Russian President Boris Yeltsin addressed the General Assembly and held talks with South African President Nelson Mandela later in the day.
Also on Sunday, anti-Castro demonstrators rallied around one of Cuban President Fidel Castro's most vocal critics --- Alina Fernandez Revuelta, his daughter. Revuelta has sharply criticised her father's rule since she fled from Cuba two years ago to settle in the United States.
