- Story Text: INTRO: Britain's Duchess of York has been giving an award for "caring", as her aides try to quell a scandal about her charitable work.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- The Duchess received the award on Monday (June 3) from the Hale House in New York, an organisation founded to care for babies born addicted to drugs.
The Duchess made a short speech praising the group and celebrating children.
Last week, she became formally divorced from the Duke of York, Queen Elizabeth II's son.
At a photo-opportunity before the gala her representative warned journalists that they were prohibited from asking her any questions.
Her spokesman, Jeffrey Schneider, then answered an inquiry about a report in Britain that a Romanian charity said it had not received any of the money it was promised from a fund-raising publicity interview.
Schneider said only a small amount of money - 800 pounds sterling (1200 United States dollars) was raised from the interview with 'Hello(' magazine, and "someone in the Duchess's office was uncomfortable giving so little money to these charities." The Duchess, Schneider said, "gave 17,000 pounds (25,500 U.S.
dollars) of her own money to fly a humanitarian Aids shipment to Romania." Schneider refused to comment on a report which said earnings from the publicity interview were used to pay for expenses incurred by the Duchess and her entourage on the trip to Romania.
