  • Story Text: INTRO: Singer Elton John's tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales, "Candle in the Wind," has gone on sale in the United States, with some shops staying open late in the face of heavy demand for the song.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------- Employees at the Tower Record store in Manhattan, New York, kept their doors open in to the early hours of the morning on Tuesday (September 23) as eager fans lined up to be the first to purchase the Elton John single.

    Several dozen people keenly awaited the unboxing of the tapes and Compact Discs (CD's). One shopper said she thought it was a historic moment and was happy to be part of it.

    The CD's and cassettes will both be selling for 2.99 United States (U.S.) dollars. Organisers hope to raise 16 million U.S.

    dollars from sales, with profits going to charities supported by Diana.

    The song, which is a re-write of a tribute to the filmstar Marilyn Monroe, was first performed live by Elton John at the funeral of Diana.
