- Story Text: The World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov on Wednesday (December 13) faced his toughest opponent ever, a computer, in what was billed "Man versus Machine - the deciding match".
The 32 year old had played the Pentium processor twice before.
He lost the first match in London, United Kingdom, in August 1994, but gained revenge in Cologne, Germany in May this year.
The third match, again in London, took less than an hour.
For Kasparov, his reputation was at stake. The computer has lightening responses and can analyse over 172,000 positions each second, more in one game than a human being can in a lifetime.
But Kasparov, who became the youngest ever World Champion at the age of 22, proved more than a match for the machine, and remains the world's greatest chess player, winning the three-match series 2-1.
