- Story Text: French President Jacques Chirac has sounded an alarm over India's nuclear testing and warned that any worsening in the situation in Indonesia would precipitate an even worse financial crisis in southeast Asia.
Chirac made his remarks on Friday (May 15) shortly before the start of the meeting of the heads of state of the world's eight leading industrialised nations, the G8.
The French leader said it was not up to him "to say if President Suharto or another should do it (introduce measures)...but if truly nothing happened in Indonesia, one could seriously fear the crisis will resume." Chirac added that 40 billion U.S.dollars of international support had been brought together to help Indonesia "but it is clear that the current political situation will not allow the application of the measures which are needed".
