- Story Text: United States ambassador to Croatia Peter Galbraith visited Turanj, a border crossing between Serb-held Krajina and Croatia proper on Thursday (August 25) and voiced grave concern over a growing refugee crisis in the nation.
Some 6,000 refugees from the northwest Bosnian enclave of Bihac left their improvised camp in the Serb-held Krajina region of Croatia and were heading for Turanj, the United Nations said.
The refugees planned to join hundreds of others who forced their way during the night into a no-man's land between the Croatian army and rebel Serb Krajina forces.
Zagreb authorities have refused to allow the Moslem refugees to enter territory under Croatia's control.
A U.N. civilian police officer at the Turanj checkpoint voiced concern the refugees' action could cause a violent response from police blocking their way.
Croatian police brought four armoured personnel carriers to the site, each mounting a machinegun, together with special police forces to block access to Croatia.
The situation at the border was tense, with refugees huddled together under umbrellas on a road through the no-man's-land. Some were trying to find protection from heavy rain in gutted houses on the sides of the road.
The refugees had fled last weekend when the Bosnian government Fifth Corps troops captured the last stronghold of rebel leader Fikret Abdic in the Bihac enclave.
Despite Bosnian government guarantees of safety, they have refused to return to their homes and have accused the Fifth Corps of killing civilians and looting during the fighting.
