- Story Text: A United Nations (U.N.) relief convoy returned to Zagreb on Saturday (March 11) having failed to deliver aid to civilians trapped in the Bihac enclave in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The convoy came under fire 12 days ago and had to take refuge at a U.N. camp. Rebel moslem forces in the area had refused to allow it to proceed.
Convoy leader Steve Burns said the people they had been trying to help had now run out of food and warehouses were empty.
British overseas aid representative Tony Winton said he believed future convoys would have similar problems and people would continue to suffer.
The rebels have used the pretext of heavy fighting to refuse to let U.N. convoys cross their lines to reach up to 150,000 civilians trapped in government territory. Civilians trapped in the Bihac enclave of northwest Bosnia now face imminent starvation because of the blockade on food convoys by rebel Serbs and Moslems, a U.N.
official said.
Earlier in the day, the UNHCR -- the main U.N. refugee agency -- decided to cut off relief supplies to the rebels until the blockade was lifted.
