- Story Text: Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin arrived in Washington on Sunday (January 28) for economic and technical cooperation talks with United States (U.S.) leaders.
Chernomyrdin was met at Andrews Air Force Base by Vice President Al Gore, his opposite number in a Russia-U.S. commission on technological and economic cooperation. He is scheduled to meet U.S. President Bill Clinton on Tuesday (January 30).
The talks were held against a backdrop of Western fears that Moscow may be veering away from market reform.
Before leaving Moscow, Chernomyrdin acknowledged that problems had arisen in Russia's negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a nine billion U.S. dollar credit line, but voiced confidence they could be overcome, Interfax news agency said.
Chernomyrdin was due to meet IMF Managing Director Michel Camdessus during his visit.
The Russian leader is due to meet House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich on Tuesday.
