- Story Text: Demonstrators gathered on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. on Thursday (February 1) to protest against France's nuclear testing, as French President Jaques Chirac addressed the House of Representatives.
Chirac announced on Monday an end to the bitterly-disputed tests four months ahead of schedule and after six of the eight originally planned underground explosions, partly in response to worldwide protests.
The protesters carried banners which said, "Don't Blow it Bill," and "No Nukes". Meanwhile inside Congress, two U.S.
congresswomen sought to block Jacques Chirac's address.
Democratic Representatives Patsy Mink of Hawaii and Patricia Schroeder of Colorado told the House of Representatives it should withdraw Chirac's rare invitation to address Congress.
Chirac, who arrived in Washington on Wednesday, has been subject to widespread criticism in the United States due to his resumption of nuclear testing in the South Pacific.
After attending a state dinner in Washington on Thursday night, Chirac flies to Chicago on Friday morning for a one-day visit. He returns to France on Friday (February 2).
