- Story Text: French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe, on a visit to the United States (U.S.), said on Thursday (January 26) that pressure must be brought to bear to encourage the Algerian government and its Islamic fundamentalist opponents to open a dialogue.
Juppe was in Washington for talks with officials of U.S.
President Bill Clinton's administration in his capacity as president of the European Union (EU). France holds the rotating presidency for this six-month period.
Juppe said France noted with interest recent talks on fundamentalism which recently took place in Rome.
"That's why we are calling for political dialogue in Algeria...We think that violence leads to a deadlock," he said, posing for photographers after talks with Secretary of State Warren Christopher.
"We have to put the pressure on in order to foster the opening of the dialogue." At a subsequent press conference, Juppe said that France will not allow French territories to become a place for acts of terrorism.
