- Story Text: United States (U.S.) General Colin Powell, in London to promote his new book, said on Monday (October 9) he will announce by the end of November whether he will run for the U.S. presidency.
Powell, who served in two U.S. administrations and is regarded as a war hero for masterminding the Gulf War campaign, has yet to decide whether to stand as a Republican or independent.
Opinion polls in the U.S. show that General Powell would beat U.S. President Bill Clinton if he were to stand in next year's presidential election.
During the morning Powell signed copies of his autobiography, A Soldier's Tale, at a bookshop in London's Picadilly district. Then, proving that he can command the attention of world leaders, he headed for a 50-minute meeting with British Prime Minister John Major.
Powell arrived for the meeting at Number 10 Downing street, the prime minister's home and residence, in a huge white stretch limousine. The limousine was so large it had difficulty turning around in the Prime Minister's forecourt.
During his visit to the United Kingdom, Powell, the son of Jamaican immigrants, will visit relatives who emigrated to Britain from Jamaica.
