- Story Text: The United Nations (U.N.) official in charge of eliminating Iraq's weapons of mass destruction said on Wednesday (August 23) Iraq's new policy of cooperation and releasing information had advanced the date for ending the ban on Iraqi oil sales.
Rolf Ekeus said Iraq pledged it was now committed to honouring the 1991 Gulf War ceasefire resolutions and if that happened the U.N. Security Council would have to lift economic sanctions.
"The Iraqi leadership declared to me that its policy from now on is 100 per cent implementation of the ceasefire arrangements," Ekeus told reporters.
"So with that the Security Council, all members without exception, should have no choice," Ekeus said in answer to a question on whether the United States would block a lifting of sanctions regardless of Iraqi actions.
Ekeus spoke a day after he met Iraqi defector Lieutenant- General Hussein Kamel Hassan, the mastermind of Iraq's banned military programmes, to cross-check information the United Nations had received in the past week in Baghdad.
He revealed few details of their discussion but said contacts with both Hussein Kamel and the Iraqi government would continue in an effort to clear remaining questions about Iraqi military programmes as quickly as possible.
