- Story Text: INTRO: American officials say a United States (U.S.) arms shipment to the Bosnian Federation will only be delivered to the Federation authorities once a Bosnian official seen as close to Iran has resigned.
_________________________________________________________________ Tanks, guns and helicopters which have arrived in the Croatian port of Ploce will stay under United States (U.S.) control until Bosnia's government takes several steps, including ousting Deputy Defence Minister Hasan Cengic, U.S. officials said on Thursday (October 24).
The weaponry that arrived in Ploce aboard a chartered ship comprised the bulk of a 100 million U.S.-dollar shipment for the Federation under a U.S. "train-and-equip" programme designed to make the Moslems and Croats a match for the Bosnian Serbs.
Unloading was to begin on Friday morning and last two to three days. The arms would then be transported overland to storage sites in Bosnia approved by the international peace force there, IFOR.
But State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns said the equipment "will only be shipped to those storage sites when some remaining issues of concern to the United States are resolved on a satisfactory basis by the Bosnian government." Burns declined to identify the issues at stake. But a senior administration official said Washington was concerned about a particular Bosnian Defence Ministry official.
The U.S. official said there were also other issues involved concerning the defence law. But he said: "The bar is not high.
There are things that can be done and can be done quickly, and then this equipment will be delivered." The U.S. equipment includes 45 M-60 battle tanks, 80 M-11 armoured personnel carriers, 15 UH-1H helicopters, 840 light anti-tank weapons, 45,000 M-16 rifles and ammunition. The programme also includes instruction for Federation army troops.
