- Story Text: European peace mediator Carl Bildt met senior officials from the five-nation Contact Group in London on Wednesday (July 26).
The United States, Russia and major European powers in the Contact Group trying to broker peace in Bosnia-Herzegovina are close to a landmark deal with Serbia that could help their cause, diplomats say.
Last week Bildt confirmed that Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic had agreed to recognise Bosnia in return for an easing of international sanctions.
This is seen by the major powers as crucial to ending the war in Bosnia, since it would further isolate the rebel Serbs and perhaps force them finally to accept a peace plan.
The United States and Germany are hesitant about concluding a deal with Serbia just as the Bosnian Serbs have defied the United Nations and overrun "safe areas" and tensions are running high with NATO.
Bildt took his deal for approval to foreign ministers from the Contact Group in London on Friday but was turned down for those reasons and because some technical details were unclear.
Bosnians, Croatians, British and French nationals were among those attending a rally held near the British foreign ministry.
Croatian protester Angela Valent indicated that the international community should either lift the arms embargo on former Yugoslavia and allow people of the region to defend themselves or stop the killing of Bosnians throughout Bosnia.
