- Story Text: Wine lovers battled over some of the world's most coveted vintages during Sotheby's wine auction in New York on Saturday (Febuary 4), despite a major snowstorm that temporarily crippled the city.
Chateau Mouton Rothschild's 1945 Vintage brought the top price at 31,050 United States (U.S) dollars, well over its high estimate of 12,000-18,000 U.S dollars.
It was sold to an American dealer.
A bidder from Hong Kong paid 28,750 U.S dollars for eleven bottles of the exceptional Chateau Petrus 1961.
Another private bidder from the United States paid 18,400 U.S dollars for a bottle of Chateau d'Yquem 1847, the highly sought after dessert wine.
Head of Sotheby's wine department, Serena Sutcliffe said the Chateau d'Yquem was arguably the world's greatest dessert wine with only six or seven bottles in the world at the moment.
Saturday's wine auction held in partnership with Sherry-Lehmann Incorparated, brought in 1.5 million U.S dollars, a close second to their first and record breaking wine auction in Manhattan in October 1995.
All prices include Sotheby's commission.
