- Story Text: Hundreds of motorcycles have gone on exhibit at New York city's Guggenheim Museum as part of a retrospective on the bike as cultural icon and design achievement.
The Guggenheim Museum in New York is paying homage to the motorcycle, in an exhibit "The Art of the Motorcycle", running June 26 - September 20.
The museum launched the exhibit on Thursday (June 25) with a press preview that began with a parade of more than 100 motorcycles through Manhattan to the Guggenheim Museum. The motocycle enthusiasts were all riding BMWs, representing the corporate sponsor of the museum show.
The exhibit, however, is a broadbrush painting of the history of the motorcycle. It includes specimens of early models from the 19th century from Germany, France, the United States and Belgium. The show continues with motorcycles from the early 20th century through the present.Honda cycles make up the bulk of the show, followed by those manufactured by Harley-Davidson, BMW and Yamaha.
Guggenheim Foundation Director Thomas Krens told Reuters Television the motorcycle is a "metaphor for the twentieth century." He continued that it deserves a scholarly examination by the museum as much as any millenia-old pottery that archeologists may dig up.
