- Story Text: THE FIRST OF THE NEW BREED OF JUMBO JETS, MAKING ITS INITIAL PASSENGER PROVING FLIGHT ACROSS THE ATLANTIC, TOUCHED DOWN AT LONDON AIRPORT TODAY (MONDAY) -- AND A NEW, STREAMLINED TERMINAL COMPLEX SWUNG INTO ACTION TO COPE WITH THE LARGEST PLANE-LOAD OF PASSENGERS EVER TO ARRIVE AT A EUROPEAN AIRPORT.
THE JUMBO JET, A BOEING 747 OF PAN-AMERICAN AIRWAYS, FLEW IN FROM NEW YORK WITH A FULL COMPLEMENT OF 19 CREW AND 362 PASSENGERS. THE PASSENGERS WERE MOSTLY PAN-AMERICAN EMPLOYEES, TOGETHER WITH A NUMBER OF OFFICIALS FROM THE UNITED STATES FEDERAL AVIATION AGENCY.
AFTER A DELAYED DEPARTURE, THE 747 COMPLETED THE ATLANTIC CROSSING IN SIX AND A HALF HOURS. THE GIANT AIRCRAFT DWARFED OTHER AIRLINERS AS IT TOUCHED DOWN AT LONDON AIRPORT.
THE 747 WEIGHTS TWICE AS MUCH AS MOST CONVENTIONAL AIRLINERS. IT MEASURES 231 FEET (69 METRES) IN LENGTH -- ROUGHLY THE DIMENSIONS OF A 23-STOREY BUILDING. AND IT CAN CRUISE AT A SPEED OF 625 M.P.H. (1,000 KMS H) OVER A RANGE OF 6,700 MILES (10,720 KMS).
BOEING HAVE DESIGNED THE 747 TO CARRY A MAXIMUM OF 490 PASSENGERS. THEY HAVE PROVIDED THREE TIMES THE AMOUNT OF BAGGAGE SPACE AVAILABLE ON CONVENTIONAL AIRLINERS.
TO COPE WITH THE FLOOD OF BAGGAGE AT LONDON AIRPORT, THE AUTHORITIES ALLOTTED TWO CONVEYER BELT SYSTEMS TO THE 747 INSTEAD OF THE USUAL ONE. THE USE OF SPECIAL CONTAINERS FOR THE BAGGAGE IS EXPECTED TO CUT UNLOADING TIME TO ABOUT 15 MINUTES.
THE AUTHORITIES HAVE ALSO UNDERTAKEN A GBP13 MILLION EXPANSION PROGRAMME TO ADAPT ONE OF THE AIRPORT TERMINALS FOR THE NEW JUMBO JETS. PAN-AMERICAN PLAN A REGULAR 747 SERVICE BETWEEN LONDON AND NEW YORK STARTING ON JANUARY 21.
