- Story Text: British military bases in Cyprus are being used by United States units taking part in the Suez Canal clearance operation.
British and United States forces, under overall Egyptian co-ordination, have recently begun clearing the canal of the many obstacles which have accumulated during the seven years it has been closed.
The parts of six mine-clearing helicopters were flown into Akrotiri base in the south-west of the island last week and on Tuesday (April 16) technicians were assembling them. They are to be shipped across to Egypt on the aircraft carrier, Iwo Jima.
A Cyprus government spokesman said this use of the bases has been approved by 'the interested governments'. In the past the continued existence of British bases on Cyprus after the granting of independence has been attacked by the Arab states.
