- Story Text: The British Government declared a state of emergency in London on Tuesday and immediately took steps to head off a possible power crisis. The situation has been caused by overtime bans by Britain's coal miners and electricity generating engineers, combined with oil shortages resulting form cutbacks in Arab oil production.
The cabinet of Prime Minister Edward Heath took the decision on Tuesday (November 13) morning. Immediately the Government clamped down on electrical display advertising sand flood-lighting and instructed commercial firms to cut down on heating. Government departments and State-owned industries will cut down on fuel consumption by 10 per cent from midnight.
The gloom over Britain depended with news of a record 129 million sterling (670 million dollars) deficit in the October trade figures.
