- Story Text: A further contingent of Austrian troops left Vienna on Tuesday (November 13) to join the United Nations Emergency Force policing the ceasefire agreement in the Middle East.
The troops, who are all volunteers from the Austrian Army, flew to Cairo in a Soviet Ilyushin airliner and their equipment was carried in three Soviet transport planes.
The soldiers will soon be on duty guarding top U.N. officials and supervising the supply routes to the encircled Egyptian Third Army.
Further detachments will come from Austria bringing the total Austrian contribution to the Emergency Force to 500 men - some of whom will be diverted to duties on Cyprus.
More than 2,000 Austrian soldiers volunteered for the peace-keeping duties. Those who were chosen will receive higher rates of pay than normal.
By November 5, the U.N. force in the Middle East exceeded 1,000 officers and men. Eventually it is planned to have a force of 7,000 officer and men on duty there.
