The head of the United Nations (UN) peace keeping force, Major-General Gunther Greindl, said on Thursday (May 2) he expected United States (US) forces to leave southern Iraq by May 3.
Greindl made the announcement, after addressing about 300 UN soldiers from Austria, Ghana, Fiji, Nepal and Denmark at a military base west of Kuwait City.
After the address most of the soldiers boarded trucks headed for the security zone, on the Kuwait-Iraq border, about 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of Doha. The UN force will replace the US troops in the security zone. One UN soldier said the mission was dangerous and he had thought carefully about it.
About 5,000 US soldiers from the 3rd Armoured Division are the last American forces in southern Iraq. They have been protecting thousands of Iraqi refugees in the border area since shortly after the Gulf war ended in February. The troops have also transported thousands to refugee camps in Saudi Arabia.
