- Story Text: Noisy but happy fans gathered in London for the English
FA Cup soccer final between two Uniteds, Manchester and
Newcastle.
Trains from the north of England brought the early
arrivals to the capital on Saturday (May 22) and, once off the
train, the supporters headed for the pubs of central London.
Newcastle lost last year's final 2-0 to London side
Arsenal, who won the League and FA Cup double.
Newcastle's last victory came against Tottenham Hotspur in
the F.A.Cup semifinal on April 11 and their league season
ended with a depressing run of defeats and draws and just four
points from their last six matches. Now they are hoping to win
their first domestic trophy since winning the Cup for the
sixth time in 1955.
Manchester United have won 19 major honours since then,
including seven F.A.Cup triumphs, and it is hard to see them
being denied a 10th overall cup success -- and their third
double in six seasons. They have not lost for 31 matches, won
the league last Sunday, aim for the double at Wembley on
Saturday and hope to make it a unique treble when they face
Bayern Munich in Barcelona on Wednesday (May 26) in the final
of the European Cup.
The history of the F.A.Cup is peppered with upsets and
shocks and although Newcastle are unlikely to be totally
outplayed as they were a year ago, they are also unlikely to
win.
Manchester United have beaten Newcastle in their only two
previous cup meetings in 1909 and 1990 -- and gone on to win
the Cup both times -- the likeliest outcome again on Saturday.
Certainly the Manchester fans were confident of success as
they made their way to the famous stadium for the match, which
kicked off at 1400gmt.
