- Story Text: United States (U.S.) Vice President Al Gore arrived in Shannon on Wednesday (September 7) and assured Irish Prime Minister Albert Reynolds that peace in Northern Ireland was at the top of the U.S.foreign policy agenda.
Gore and Reynolds held a half hour session on the latest developments following the ceasefire call by the Irish Republican Army (IRA).
As the two leaders met, across the border in Belfast, Britain's Northern Ireland Secretary said British troops had reduced their alert status.
Sir Patrick Mayhew said a reduction had been made in reaction to what was perceived as a reduced threat during the ceasefire.
The Gore and Reynolds talks follow a meeting in the U.S.last week between U.S.
President Bill Clinton and Irish Deputy Prime Minister Dick Spring.
After the talks, Gore congratulated Reynolds for his role in helping to secure the IRA ceasefire. He said British Prime Minister John Major had also played an important role.
The United States Vice President said it was not important that the word "permanent" was missing from the IRA's ceasefire statement.
He said the ceasefire statement spoke for itself.
Gore said said the U.S.commitment was to help all parties secure a lasting peace, and realise that continued violence would benefit no-one.
Reynolds said Ireland owed the Clinton administration a debt of gratitude in helping progress towards peace.Reynolds said he had been reassured on Wednesday of the U.S.commitment to peace.
On calls for loyalists to join the Irish government's "forum for peace" Gore said he could not direct any party to take a particular action, but he saw Reynolds as a man of his word who was worthy of trust.
Reynolds said a solution could not be found to the Northern Ireland situation without Unionist input to discussions.
