- Story Text: United States (U.S.) President Bill Clinton and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl on Friday (March 26) pledged to do all they could to support reforms in Russia.
At a news conference after their first meeting in Washington, Clinton and Kohl stressed their support for Russian President Boris Yeltsin's democratic reforms.
Kohl has said that Germany has reached the limits of what it could pay after providing more than 49 billion U.S. dollars in aid to Russia, more than half of the Western total.
At the White House news conference, Clinton praised Germany for its leading role in providing economic assistance to Russia and said he had told Kohl of additional U.S. support he meant to present to Yeltsin at their April 3-4 summit in Canada.
Clinton said he planned to propose assistance in which the United States, Germany and other leading industrial nations could join forces and which might help promote Russian reforms.
Kohl praised Clinton for his efforts to help Russian reforms beyond the framework of a forthcoming Group of Seven (G7) industrialised nations summit in July.
