- Story Text: Cubans continued to set sail for the United States on Sunday (August 21) as official Cuban media scorned Washington's new moves to increase pressure on President Fidel Castro.
There was comment from government officials on United States (U.S.) President Bill Clinton's new measures, which include detention of Cuban refugees who reach U.S. soil and removal to Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba of those picked up at sea, as well as tightened economic sanctions.
The Cuban news agency Prensa Latina issued several articles condemning the measures, which were announced on Saturday.
Clinton's move to stem a flow of emigrants has hit the highest levels since the Mariel boatlift of 1980 -- when some 125,000 Cubans arrived in Florida in a matter of months failed to deter rafters.
The U.S. Coast Guard said it had picked up more than 4,800 people this month, more than 800 on Saturday.
On Sunday, Cubans bound for Florida continued to board rafts and set off from ports such as Cojimar, 15 kilometres (10 miles) east of Havana.
