- Story Text: The people of Haiti have begun to feel the effect of the tightening of United States (U.S.) and United Nations-imposed embargoes with food and fuel supplies in the capital Port-Au-Prince shrinking as prices rise.
On Wednesday (August 17) people queued in the city to withdraw money from banks and bartered in the streets for goods which included U.S. ration supplies.
The trade sanctions, which aim at removing the country's military leaders, have deepened the already poverty-stricken island's economic plight, fuelling inflation, closing factories and throwing tens of thousands of Haitians out of work.
Feeding centres have been set up in the poorest parts of the island to sustain those who cannot begin to afford the rising prices.
Although the embargo has further isolated Haiti's military leaders, they have vowed to withstand an invasion rather than restore ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
