- Story Text: Federal workers in the United States (U.S.) returned to work after nearly a month-long government shutdown on Thursday (January 11), as the impasse between President Bill Clinton and the Republican-led congress threatened to continue.
Government employees said it felt good to be back at work, and some spoke of the financial hardship they suffered during the time they were suspended.
Workers were scheduled to return to work on Monday January 8, after Clinton officially ended the three-week government shutdown the previous Saturday by signing legislation to fund all government agencies up to January 26 and give employees back pay for the time missed.
One of the worst snow storms in Washington's history intervened and prevented the workers returning to work until Thursday.
However, House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich said he was pessimistic about the chance for a lasting budget deal with Clinton and said Congress might resort to keeping the federal government running at dwindling funding levels for the rest of the year.
Despite the threats of further problems, tourist attractions such as the Washington monument were once more open to visitors after being closed during the shutdown and snowstorm.
