- Story Text: Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has been speaking about the "hard" game his team faces against Monaco in their European Cup quarter final tie.
Ferguson told a news conference at a hotel in France on Tuesday (March 3) that the first leg of the European Cup quarter-final tie in Monaco on Wednesday would be a hard game, because there are no easy matches at that level of competition.
He said playing would be a test of technique, touch and courage -- the courage for the players to play the way they wanted to.
Player Gary Neville said European competition was special for the team because they wanted to be a great Manchester United side and comparable to some of the fine squads of the past.
Rumours had circulated in Monaco in recent weeks that coach Jean Tigana would leave the club at the end of the season, possibly to take over from Aime Jacquet as France's coach after the World Cup finals. But the former French international on Sunday signed an extension to his contract, which was due to expire in June.
Tigana, in charge since the 1995-96 season, guided Monaco to the French league championship in 1997 and has overseen the emergence into the top echelons of the game of 20-year-old French internationals Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet.
