It's not me as a Londoner just going to them oh this is what we're into, this is what we're dancing to, this is what we're buying, it's a Russian person saying I'm over here and this is what they like some of its good, some of it's bad. - Story Text: Soho. The heart of London's nightlife......and the
centre of the capital's thriving media industry.
If anything's going to happen, it'll happen here...and
if the rest of the world are going to find out about it,
it'll be via the cameras and microphones lining the endless
television and radio studios along the street.
London's media scene is a magnet to journalists from
all over the world. It offers limitless stories and gives
people pretty free reign to cover them as they choose.
Which is why Russia's hottest talent decided to leave
his home in Moscow for the bright lights of London.
His name is Yegor Shishkovsky, and it's from these
studios in Wardour Street that he broadcasts to an estimated
40 million people.Covering 11 time zones that stretch from
Latvia to Japan, this is the biggest radio audience in the
world...and the listeners are tuning in via satellite from
their homes in the former Soviet Union.
The hourly show is a mix of the latest and greatest in
Western music, film and celebrity scandal......it's a
cocktail Russians are finding irresistible.
Madonna, Chris Rea and Dave Stewart are just a few of the
stars that have included Yegor's program in their publicity
rounds. And those feeling particularly brave have even tried
their hand at Russian:
Produced by Londoner Paul Leaper, the idea for the show
came 4 years ago, when he first met Yegor.Identifying the
massive gap between life in Russia, Paul set about
establishing a link:
"The people that we broadcast to are just like us here in
London but they haven't had the same history of music and
entertainment, and therefore they've got a lot of catching
up to do.There's a huge hunger out there to find out what's
going on and with 'Live From The West' we're offering them a
view of what's going on but through the lives of a Russian
and that's very important. It's not me as a Londoner just
going to them oh this is what we're into, this is what we're
dancing to, this is what we're buying, it's a Russian person
saying I'm over here and this is what they like some of
it's good, some of it's bad.And I think that's why the
programs is appealing to so many people."
These are the studios of Russia's biggest commercial
radio station - Silver Rain. It's one of a number of
stations that transmit 'Live From The West'.
Dmitry Savitsky - the station's programme director says that
Yegor is in a unique position:
"He's covering all the information that's created in
London - he says - which is the musical capital of the
world.Yegor knows about events first and tells about them
on air.If he lived in Moscow or St.Petersburg then he
wouldn't be able to do it."
This is the only bridge many Russians have to Western
life.Outside Moscow and St.Petersburg, a handful of state
stations are all there is on offer, and even the commercial
stations that are operating from the big cities face huge
obstacles.
It's because Russian djs are having to just settle with
their own music which Yegor refuses to play that the program
has gathered a huge following. And since Live From the West
now goes out on the Internet, listeners can now see the man
in action as well as hear him.
And he's certainly something to look at.He has been
stopped on numerous occasions from excitable girls thinking
they've spotted Leonardo diCaprio and he's beginning to get
more photos than record releases.
But there's certainly more to this man than his face.
There's no question that he thrives on the music and gossip
he delivers...but he's also determined to fill some of the
more serious gaps in young Russians understanding.Drugs
awareness, crime and Aids are just a few of the subjects he
tackles in his show for many of the listeners, this is the
only access they have to issues that are increasingly
becoming the norm:
There's no doubt that Yegor and Paul have hit on a
winning formula, but since the program's main sponsor - the
British Tourist Authority pulled out, the team are now
faced with finding a new backer. The question is whether a
British company will really care about reaching to an
audience of Russians.
It's an argument that should appeal quite strongly to
a business world that is becoming increasingly global. And
with a program that is already so strongly established, it
doesn't seem too risky an investment.
Meanwhile Yegor will go on doing what he does best.
It's only a matter of time till this star is picked up
by the rest of the world.
