- Story Text: A group of 50 United States (U.S.) paratroopers and pilots arrived in Lvov, western Ukraine from the NATO base in Stuttgart on Monday (August 22) for a training session ahead of the joint U.S.-Ukrainian military exercise scheduled for September this year at Fort Bragg in South Carolina.
The U.S. experts will spend a week at the Ukrainian airforce base in Lvov and instruct their Ukrainian collegues on U.S.
airforce field procedures.
Commander of the U.S. group Colonel David Asmenou told reporters upon his arrival in Lvov that the training and exercise were conducted within the framework of the Partnership for Peace agreement.
Asmenou said the main goal was to acquaint Ukrainian military personnel with the use of U.S. technology, expand contacts among the military of the two countries and promote integration.
The more specific purpose of the exercise was to give training on U.S. parachutes to Ukrainian troops who will take part in a parachute jump in the U.S. in September, he added.
Partnership for Peace, adopted by a NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) summit in January, calls for establishing cooperative links between the alliance's states and their former foes in the now dissolved, formerly Soviet-led Warsaw Pact.
