- Story Text: United States (U.S.) soldiers began controversial joint peacekeeping exercises in Russia's southern Urals on Friday (September 2).
The 250 servicemen are the first U.S. soldiers to hold manoeuvres on Russian soil.
The joint manoeuvres by the former Cold War arch-foes are taking place in Totsk in the Orenburg region, not far from the Kazakh frontier.
Due to run from September 2-10, the exercises are designed to help work out tactics, techniques and procedures for future U.S.-Russia peacekeeping operations.
One U.S. officer said the the most important aspect of the exercises would be that they would bring generations of young people together. "The new generations have great opportunities today - unknown to my generation which knows only Cold War," he said.
Despite the end of the Cold War the training, first announced in 1993, has provoked unease among some Russian conservatives and outrage among extreme nationalist and communist groupings.
Nationalists picketed at the gates of the base on Friday, saying the Americans were sure to use the opportunity for spying.
Hardliners have denounced President Boris Yeltsin's government for allowing the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) beyond the Volga River, once a taboo zone for any foreigner.
