- Story Text: A replica of the "Golden Hinde" -- the ship in which the English sailor, Sir Francis Drake, travelled round the world nearly 400 years ago -- sailed up the River Thames into London on Thursday (April 4) amin the thunder of cannon and the crack of musket fire from the shore.
After spending the summer moored by the Tower of London, the "Golden Hinde" will sail to California, a region which Drake claimed for the British government in 1579. Drake was the first European to set foot on that part of the North American continent.
Drake's reputation as a pirate and a plunderer was reflected in the way the ship sailed into London on Thursday. It was overwhelming by a boarding party. Both the pirates and the crew were dressed in the costumes of Drake's period.
But the "Golden Hinde" is not just a historical momento, it is a ???mmercial proposition to the Californian businessmen who have financed its construction. They hope that thousands of visitors will repay their massive outlay. There have been numerous design problems and it has so far cost GBP 450,000 pounds sterling (1,100,000 dollars US) to get the ship in shape for the transatlantic crossing. In case anything should go wrong there is a 20th century diesel engine concealed within the ship.
SYNOPSIS: In line with Drake's reputation for being something of a pirate as well as an explorer, the 'Golden Hinde' came in with cannons blazing.
The fire was returned from the shore.
The Golden Hinde's crew were dressed in the costume of Drake's time. In the background - the beat of the drums used to spur on the soldiers in the sixteenth century.
The ship is later sailing to San Francisco -- the point on the Californian coast where Drake is believed to have landed in fifteen seventy nine. He was the first European to land on that part of the North American continent and immediately claimed the region for the British Government.
