- Story Text: Military personnel from the United States have joined
soldiers from 20 other countries for military exercises in
Western Ukraine.
The United States Army led colleagues in shooting and
deployment exercises on Wednesday (July 16, 2003).
About 250 military personnel from the Californian and
Illinois national guard joined 700 service members from
Azerbaijan, Austria, Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Canada,
Denmark, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan,
Latvia, Moldova, Norway, Poland, Russia, Romania, Sweden,
Slovakia and Turkey according to organisers.
Major-general Paul Monroe of the National Guard said that
these exercises would help his troops be prepared for their
overseas assignments.
"In today's world situation, we have about 2,500 soldiers
[from California guard] deployed overseas now, in Iraq, Bosnia
and Kosovo. So, this training helps us, with the other nations
that we are going to have to work with when we participate in
overseas exercises," he said.
The national guard are composed of civilians who can be
deployed within their home state by the governor or abroad by
the federal army.
The soldiers fired rifles and received instruction in the
use of rocket-propelled grenades.
