- Story Text: Thousands of New Yorkers lined up for hours to visit a
job fair for those who either lost their jobs or were
adversely effected by the September 11 attack on the World
Trade Center.
Thousands of job-seekers huddled for hours on a
blustery fall day on long lines that snaked around city
blocks, to attend a city-sponsored jobs fair held on Wednesday
to help those jobless in the wake of the attacks on the twin
towers.
The lines snaked twice around the huge Madison Square
Garden complex, a testament to the countless casualties that
continue to pile up in the wake of the attacks miles and
months from the devastating day at grand zero.
One of those displaced workers lining up outside the Garden
was Edward Vianno.
"I was a block away from the the twin towers during that
day, so my job got shut down because of that, till now, so I'm
just waiting to see if they open it back up or to see if I
just have to move on," said Vianno.
Last week New York Major Rudolph Giuliani said the city
could lose up to 1 billion dollars in tax revenue and 100,000
jobs because of the September 11 attack on the World Trade
Center.
Mary al-Hakeem worked in 2 World Trade Center for a
security firm, but was laid off after the collapse.
"Right now I cannot be too picky but I don't want to take
just anything. But the main thing is a J.O.B.. That's all I'm
interested in is a job. I need to maintain my household," said
al-Hakeem.
Inside the job expo, some 200 employers from 1-800-TOWTRUCK
to IBM set up cheerfully decorated recruiting tables to hand
out applications, accept resumes and generally cheer people
on.
Deputy Mayor Anthony Coles said there were some 10,00 jobs
available at the jobs fair.
"Today, here at Madison Square Garden, we have 200
employers who have more that 10,000 jobs available. We've
asked the employers to give priority to people who've lost
their jobs because of the attack," said Cole.
Easily the most popular recruiting table belonged to the
New York City Fire Department, where firefighters chatted with
job-seekers who wanted to know when the next firefighter's
exam might be held.
Some of the employers present at the job fair included
Macy's department store, IBM, JP Morgan Chase and AOL Time
Warner. Also represented were organizations such as the United
States National Guard, the Girl Scouts of America, and local
museums.
According to Cole, because of the long lines and the calls
from other employers who wanted to participate, the city is
planning to hold another fair soon, and it could become a
regular event. Later in the afternoon on Wednesday some of
those who had been waiting for hours to enter the job fair
grew upset when they were told they might not get in.
