CU Nujoma speaking 1.22 NUJOMA: "SWAPO delegation discussion with the Honourable Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, our discussion was mainly centred on the question of Namibia. We expressed the view that we hope that the United States will exert pressure on racist South Africa to relinquish its illegal administration from Namibia and also asked the U.S. to support U.N. efforts to try and solve the Namibian problem by peaceful means. However, our only hope is that the U.S. government will do what we have requested them to do, otherwise I have nothing to add." Initials OS/1815 Script is copyright Reuters Limited. - Story Text: The U.S. Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, was asked on Wednesday (29 September) to support international economic sanctions against South Africa to secure the independence of Namibia. Mr. Sam Nujoma, head of the South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO), made the plea during an hour-long meeting with Dr. Kissinger in a New York hotel.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Nujoma told Dr. Kissinger the only hope for the people f Namibia was for the U.S. government to support SWAPO's demands for self-determination and national independence. South Africa has occupied Namibia since 1919 under a now-revoked League of Nations mandate. The United Nations recognises SWAPO as the authentic representative of the Namibian people. Mr. Nujoma later outlined the subjects he discussed with Dr. Kissinger.
