- Story Text: Hundreds have gathered in Washington D.C in the
United States to enjoy the annual Bastille day celebrations
Friday (July 14), and to watch the high-stakes 26th annual
waiter race.
People from across the USA made their way to the
nations' capital to enjoy the festivities at the Bastille day
party to mark the French national day.
Dancers in French cancan costume intrigued the crowds
kicking their legs high during the cancan -- one man,
overcome with delight, didn't miss the opportunity to take a
few photographs.
The crowds enjoyed singing and dancing while the hosts of
the celebrations prepared for the main event --- the 26th
annual Bastille day waiters race.
One hundred waiters and waitresses from across the United
States took to the streets of the nation's capital with on
goal in mind; to be first to finish the twelve block race
without spilling their tray.
They raced down the streets, cheered on by French
flag-waving spectators, having to deal with the occasional
thunder shower on the way.
Most made it the length of the race without spilling, but
in the end only two were asked to take their place on the
stage to accept prizes.
Peter Vanderberg and Maria Potting both received two round
trip tickets to Paris, much to the delight of the crowd
gathered which were feeling pretty good themselves having had
their share of champagne.
Similar races were held in the streets of Paris each July
14th marking Bastille day.
This year marks the 211th anniversary of the "Storming of
Bastille," the fortress in Paris captured the outset of the
revolution.
