- Story Text: The United States has wrapped up a two-week military
training exercise in Thailand with a spectacular show of force
south of Bangkok.
More than 20,000 troops from Thailand, the United
States and Singapore have spent the past two weeks taking part
in a joint military training across Thailand, called 'Cobra
Gold 2002'.
At the top of the training agenda was anti-terrorism, as
well as simulated nuclear and biological warfare,
communication and logistics, and peacekeeping techniques.
On Tuesday (May 28) all three countries combined to put on
a spectacular military show in Rayong, south of the capital
Bangkok.
The one-hour show of might began at sea with watercraft
being launched from both U.S and Thai ships anchored close to
shore.
Dozens of helicopters took part in the display as well as
two fighter jets -- as soldiers from both sides showed off
their skills on a nearby beach.
"The U.S. has had a long standing security agreement with
Thailand. They are a partner in the U.S. regional security for
south east Asia. The United States, Singapore and Thailand
recently participated in a peacekeeping mission in East Timor.
Exercises like Cobra Gold help prepare us for future
contingencies," said Captain Landon Hutchens from the United
States Marine Corps.
It was not just U.S. forces teaching the Thais - American
troops benefited from a variety of survival exercises,
including snake handling techniques and learning about what
insects and reptiles they can eat in a jungle environment.
"Training in this environment is very unique. Some of the
units in the artillery from the marines train in 29 Palms
California in a desert environment. Training in the
mountainous rugged, jungle environment the Thais have taught
us how to operate in these harsh conditions and operate
successfully together," Captain Hutchens said.
