- Story Text: U.S. Ambassdor announces five million dollar reward
for capture of U.S. defense contractors held hostage by
rebels.
The United States offered a reward of up to $5
million (U.S.) on Thursday (Dec. 4) for information leading
to the arrest or conviction of those involved in the death
of one U.S. military contractor and the kidnapping of three
others. The United States ambassador to Colombia William
Braucher Wood made the announcement at a media conference
in Bogota and said the reward was being offered by the U.S.
Defense Department.
The reward is the latest effort by the government to
free three U.S. citizens whose plane was shot down by
leftists rebels in February of this year while flying over
the Colombian jungle.
"During the last 10 months the Colombian and United
States authorities have used all the appropriate resources
to find our fellow citizens and bring to justice those
responsible for the kidnappings and the murders of those
colleagues," said Wood. "This efforts will continue. I
want to extend our appreciation to the government of
Colombia."
Members of the leftist rebel group Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia (FARC) have claimed responsibility for
killing pilot Thomas Janis and kidnapping three other men
on the plane. The U.S. government said the plane was flying
over the Colombian jungle on an anti-drug mission.
