- Story Text: English Premier League champions Manchester United
arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Friday (July 20) to a warm welcome
from their Malaysian fans.
United, generally regarded as the richest soccer
club in the world, will play a Malaysia select XI on Sunday
(July 22) as part of their three-nation Asian tour.
More than 500 avid supporters of the "Red Devils" turned
up at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport to greet their
favourite team.
Most of the fans were wearing team colours and held aloft
banners, flags, magazines, autograph
books and photographs for the Manchester United players to
sign.
A group of fans from the Malaysian Red Devils supporters
club sang team songs as they waited for the
team to arrive.
When the players emerged onto the KLIA concourse,
pandemonium broke out as the crowd surged past police lines to
meet the players who had to fight their way through to a
waiting bus.
At a press conference later, Ferguson spoke about the
team's chances in the new season and new signings. Ruud Van
Nistelrooy and Juan Veron.
Also at the press conference were defenders Jaap Stam and
Gary Neville and striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Asked whether he might change the team play formation with
the inclusion of the new signings, Ferguson said he will try
several formations in the Asian tour.
"I know my favourite system has always been 4-4-2. I have
always played 4-4-2 differently from a lot of teams so I think
Veron and (Paul) Scholes can adapt to that possibility,"
Ferguson said.
Ferguson also said Manchester United would get better in
the new season.
"I have been privileged to have a bunch of players who
share the same desires as I have. So therefore I am quite
comfortable when I put them on the field because I know that
my trust is in good hands and I think we will do well this
season, I really do," Ferguson said.
This is Ferguson's last season as Manchester United
manager.
Following Sunday's match against Malaysia, Manchester
United will fly to Singapore and Thailand for matches against
the national teams there.
