- Story Text: The United States has sent four transport planes loaded
with relief goods to victims of the recent Algerian
earthquake.
Four C-130 transport planes left Ramstein U.S. Air Base
in western Germany early on Thursday morning (June 5) and
headed to Algiers, Algeria.
The planes load such as tents, cots and sleeping bags,
generators, kitchen tents and utensils are a donation from the
United States government as part of an ongoing humanitarian
aid effort.
"The aircraft have brought in supplies to feed many, many
Algerians and they are part of a very large amount of relief
supplies that have come from the people of the United States
to the people of Algiers, and Algeria," U.S. State Department
under secretary Marc Grossman told reporters at Algiers
airport.
"I think its the right thing to do," said one U.S. Air
Force crew member who attended the relief flight expressed
pride.
"People are in need and America has always been quick to
help. It feels good to help people out in a time of need,"
said Lt. Col. Tim Marceau.
More than 2,000 people were killed and over 9,000 injured
when a powerful earthquake struck the outskirts of Algiers on
May 21.
Thursdays shipment was the second relief flight for
Algeria originating from the United States European Central
Command, based in Germany.
