- Story Text: Cuba and the United Kingdom has marked 100 years of
diplomatic relations with a concert that paid homage to the
discoverer and producer of The Beatles, Sir George Martin.
The 76 year old legendary composer has participated in
the concert, conducting "Yellow Submarine" and "Hey Jude".
The discoverer and producer of the music industry's
most famous quartet, The Beatles, paid a visit to a John
Lennon bronze statue in a Havana park before attending a
concert on Friday (November 01) that paid homage to the
fabulous four.
Sir George Martin, arrived in Cuba on Wednesday (October
30) where he gave a lecture regarding the production of The
Beatles "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".
On Friday (November 01), Martin attended a concert by
Cuba's National Symphony Orchestra where various tracks from
the famed album were performed. Martin took centre stage to
conduct "Yellow Submarine" and "Hey Jude".
"A memorable evening for me. I did very little, I just
played two pieces but the warmth from the people touched my
heart, it was overwhelming," Martin said following the
concert.
The concert was part of a series of events entitled
"Islands and Ideas" and organized by Britain's diplomatic
mission, the Cuban Cultural Ministry and the Office of City
History to celebrate 100 years of diplomatic relations between
the Communist-ruled island and the United Kingdom.
