- Story Text: Russia and the United States have ratified a treaty on
mutual legal assistance at a special ceremony at the Russian
embassy in Washington.
U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and Russian
ambassador Yuri Ushakov carried out the formalities of the
treaty ratification after talks between Powell and visiting
Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov.
The treaty, which was signed in 1999, sets procedures for
the exchange of legal information in criminal cases.
A Russian embassy statement said it would be especially
useful against organised crime, drug trafficking and
terrorism.
Powell said that his talks with Kasyanov covered the
entire scope of the U.S.-Russian relationship and helped
prepare for a summit this spring in Moscow and St. Petersburg
between President George W. Bush and Russian President
Vladimir Putin.
