- Story Text: Seven-time Wimbledon champion Steffi Graf early Friday
morning gave birth three weeks prematurely to a healthy boy
with the child's father, tennis pro Andre Agassi, at her side.
The child, named Jaden Gil Agassi, was born at 3:30
a.m. PDT (1030 GMT) at Valley Hospital in Las Vegas. He
weighed 5 pounds, 14 ounces, (approx 2.7 k) hospital officials
said on Saturday.
"This is the proudest day of our lives," the tennis-star
parents said in a statement. "We are so blessed and thankful
for the gift of our son. We look forward to the joys and
challenges of parenthood."
Graf and Agassi were married Monday in a private ceremony
in Las Vegas.
It is the first marriage for Germany's Graf, 32, who
retired from professional tennis in 1999 after winning 22
grand slam singles titles. She has since been a fixture at
Agassi's matches.
Graf topped the women's world rankings in 1987, holding the
spot for a record three years.
Agassi, who has won seven grand slam singles titles and is
second in the world rankings behind Brazil's Gustavo Kuerten,
has pulled out of next week's Tennis Master Series in Paris
because of his marriage to Graf.
It is the second marriage for Las Vegas native Agassi, 31,
who wed actress Brooke Shields in 1997 after a much-publicized
romance. The two divorced in 1999.
In an interview in August, Agassi said he was overjoyed
about Graf's pregnancy
Graf said last week that she wanted to get back to tennis
after the birth and added that she can imagine her son will
also play: "I think he will inherit a certain sporting
ability," she said.
