- Story Text: Troops of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in Golan continued to go about their regular duties during the last few days that their mandate to be in the territory had to run. It was only on Sunday (30 November) -- with little more than five hours to go -- that the U.N. Security Council approved a six-month extension of the mandate, which was due to expire at midnight.
The United States joined twelve other members din voting for the resolution. The Council also decided to reconvene on 12 January, 1976 the Security Council, Soviet Ambassador Jacob Malik, afterwards read a statements prepared by the sponsors of the resolution which stated that it was the understanding of the majority of the Security Council, that when it reconvenes in January, the representatives of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) would be invited to participate.
Disagreements over the way in which a reference to the PLO should be included, held up the decision to extend the mandate. The Council began private consultations on the question on Friday (28 November) when Secretary General Kurt Waldheium reported to them on his return from talks in Damascus and other Middle East capitals. He told them that Syria had made it a condition for the mandate to be renewed that a new round of talks should take place with the PLO present.
In a written statements after the vote, Israeli Ambassador, Mr.Chain Herzog, said he saw in the resolution "a surrender to Syrian blackmail and Soviet dictates." His Government would announce its position after a specially convened Cabinet meeting on Monday (1 December).
SYNOPSIS: Troops of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force in Golan continued to go about their regular duties during the last few days that the Force's mandate to be in the territory had to run. It was only on Sunday, that the United Nations Security Council approved a six month extension of the mandate -- due to expire at midnight.
The extension came with little more than five hours to run on the old one. After the vote, the President of the Council, Soviet Ambassador Jacob Malik, read a statement prepared by the sponsors of the resolution which stated that it was the understanding of the majority of the Council members that when the Council reconvenes to discuss the Middle East in January, representatives of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation will be invited to attend.
In a written statement afterwards, the Israeli Ambassador, Mr. Chaim Herzog, described the resolution as a surrender to syrian blackmail and soviet dictates. His Government would announce its position shortly.
