- Story Text: The U.S. and Spain have put aside tensions in order
to step up judicial cooperation in the fight against "terrorism".
The United States and Spain put aside strains in
their relationship on Friday (December 17, 2004) as they agreed
to step up judicial cooperation in the fight against crime
and terrorism.
Spain's Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez
Zapatero angered U.S. President George W. Bush by ordering
Spanish troops home from Iraq as soon as he took office in
April.
The U.S. ambassador to Spain skipped Spain's national
day parade in October because of a year-old slight by
Zapatero and then Bush failed to return Zapatero's
telephone call congratulating him on his re-election in
November.
But it was all smiles on Friday as visiting U.S.
Attorney-General John Ashcroft and Spanish Justice Minister
Juan Fernando Lopez signed updated agreements on
extradition and mutual legal assistance, under which
nations share information which can help them bring
suspects to trial.
