- Story Text: U.S. forces and Iraqi police block off streets in a
Baghdad neighbourhood and detonate a bomb planted near
houses.
U.S. forces blocked a street in the Baladiyat neighbourhood
of Baghdad on Saturday (July 31, 2004) to detonate a bomb planted
near houses.
Residents said U.S. forces and Iraqi police tried to
defuse the bomb and when they failed they closed the street
and blew it up.
The blast created a huge smoke cloud and a crater in
the ground. The force of the blast also smashed windows in
nearby houses.
U.S. forces usually use a remote controlled machine to
defuse explosives planted on streets.
Roadside bombs are a favourite weapon used by
insurgents to attack U.S. forces.
