- Story Text: German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer has called on
the United Nations Security Council to finish its debate over
new resolution on weapons inspections to allow the inspectors
to return to Iraq.
Referring to a speech by U.S. President George W. Bush
Monday (October 7, 2002) night, Fischer urged the U.N. to quickly
adopt a new resolution on inspections.
"I believe it is of utmost importance for the Security
Council to form an opinion and to create a basis that the
inspectors can soon begin their work and can avoid tragedy on
the basis of this work. This is I believe what is important.
It is up to the Security Council to reach a decision on the
resolution and based on that resolution the regime in Baghdad
then needs to fully fulfil its obligations, fulfil them
without limitation", he told a joint press conference with
Indian Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha on Tuesday (October 8).
German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, who received
Indian Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha to discuss bilateral
issues and the situation in South Asia, also called on India
and Pakistan to reduce tensions.
"Let me add that we appeal to all sides to refrain from
anything that could be remotely interpreted as an escalation
and that everything should be done to create a new climate of
dialogue and to return to dialogue", he said.
