- Story Text: Egypt's President Anwar Sadat has called on the United States to initiate a dialogue with the Palestine Liberation Organisation (P.L.O.) President Sadat was speaking to a delegation form the Foreign Relations Committee of the U.S. Hose of Representatives on the second day of their two-day visit to Cairo on Tuesday (6 January).
President Sadat stressed the importance of the need for talks between the U.S. and the P.L.O. and said that any settlement that could be reached should ensure the rights of the Palestine people who were at the core of the Middle East crisis.
The delegation of U.S. congressmen was headed by Mr. William Bromfield, and is currently on a Middle East fact-finding tour. They will also visit Yugoslavia and Turkey.
They were accompanied on the trip by their wives, and were received at President Sadat's residence at Barrage, 25 kilometres (15 miles) from Cairo, by the President and his wife, Jehan, on Tuesday.
SYNOPSIS: Egypt's President Anwar Sadat and his wife Jehan entertained a group of visiting United States congressmen and their wives, at their official residence at Barrage, fifteen miles north of Cairo, on Tuesday.
The congressmen, a delegation from the Foreign Relations Committee of the U.S. House of Representative, arrived the previous day for a two-day visit to Egypt. They were led by Mr. william Bromfield.
During his talk with the delegation, President Sadat stressed the need for a dialogue between the United States and the Palestine Liberation Organisation as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.
The President said the United States should start the talks and any settlement that could be brought about should ensure the rights of the Palestine people since they were the core of the Middle East crisis.
After Egypt the delegation was going on to visit Israel, Iran, Turkey and Yugoslavia.
