- Story Text: Campaigners against Zimbabwean president Robert
Mugabe's regime staged a protest at the start of the England
versus Zimbabwe cricket test series in London.
Demonstrators were outside Lords for the peaceful but
noisy protest as spectators turned up for the first test, the
start of which was delayed by rain.
Human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, leader of the
"Stop The Tour" campaign said England should not be playing
cricket against the representatives of a regime which used
torture, rape and murder as weapons of political oppression.
Mr Tatchell also criticised the Zimbabwean team selection,
saying players who opposed Mugabe's government had been
omitted and the team was "politically cleansed".
Some 94 British MPs have signed a House of Commons motion
opposing the tour and many of them had urged England to
boycott its games in Zimbabwe during the World Cup earlier
this year because of human rights abuses under the Mugabe
regime.
